Is the Megaformer Hard for Beginners? What to Expect in Your First Class
Yes, it's challenging. Your muscles will shake. The movements will ask you to slow down, stay present and keep going a little longer than you thought you could.
But challenging should never mean feeling lost. Those are two different things, and the second one is what actually keeps people from booking.
Do I need to be in shape before my first class?
No. You don't need to be stronger, more flexible or in shape enough before you walk through our doors.
This is the most common reason people put off trying THE Megaformer, and it gets the order backwards. The class is how you get stronger. Waiting until you're strong enough to take it means waiting forever.
Spring tension is adjustable, which means the same exercise can be made easier or harder for the person doing it. Your instructor changes the load and offers modifications in real time based on what your body is doing that day.
You don't need to know how the machine works
The Megaformer looks like a lot the first time you see it. Springs, handles, straps, a moving carriage.
You don't need to understand any of it in advance. That's what your instructor is there for. They'll CUE you where to put your hands and feet, guide you through every movement, help you adjust your position, and offer modifications when your body needs them.
Classes are capped at 11 people, which is the whole reason this works. In a room of 11, your instructor knows it's your first class and coaches you accordingly.
What actually happens in a class
Forty minutes, low impact and high intensity, on a Megaformer.
Low impact means no jumping and no pounding on your knees or hips. High intensity means the work is slow and continuous, holding muscles under tension rather than rushing through repetitions. That combination is why it's hard on your muscles and easy on your joints.
Your instructor will cue tempo, position and breath throughout. When your legs start shaking, that's the point of the exercise, not a sign you're doing it wrong.
REMEMER TO ARRIVE 10 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS STARTS AND TO BRING A PAIR OF GRIP SOCKS IF YOU HAVE THEM!
What your instructor is actually doing
Guiding you through every movement. Adjusting your position. Offering modifications when your body needs them. And encouraging you through the moments when that little voice starts telling you that you can't.
Because you can. That last part isn't a slogan, it's most of the job.
What changes after a few classes
Something begins to shift. The machine feels less intimidating. The movements become more familiar. You feel yourself getting stronger, and you start trusting what your body can do.
Before long, the workout you were nervous to try becomes the class you feel off without.
Frequently asked questions
Is Megaformer good for beginners? Yes. Spring tension is adjustable and instructors modify exercises on the spot, so beginners and long-time clients work in the same class at the level that fits them.
Do I need Pilates experience? No. Most people arrive with none. The method borrows from Pilates but the instruction assumes you're starting from zero.
Will I be able to keep up? You'll be able to do the class. Keeping up isn't really the measure, since everyone is working at different spring tensions and different tempos. What matters is staying with the movement rather than matching the person next to you.
How sore will I be? Most people feel it a day or two after their first class, particularly in the legs and core. That eases considerably after the first few classes as your body adapts.
How many classes before it clicks? AROUND 10 CLASSES is typical. The first is orientation, and by the tENTH CLASS you stop thinking about the machine and start thinking about the work.
