Why Are Megaformer Reps So Slow? The Four-Count Explained
If you've ever wanted to speed up just to escape the shake, we get it.
But slow is where the work happens. That painfully slow four-count takes momentum out of the movement and keeps your muscles working longer. Here's what that actually does.
What the four-count is doing
Momentum is a shortcut. When you move quickly, the weight carries itself through part of the range, and your muscles get a break in the middle of a rep you thought you were doing.
A four-count removes that. There's no swing to borrow from, so the muscle has to produce force through the entire range, start to finish, in both directions.
The result is that a set of eight slow reps asks more of a muscle than a set of twenty fast ones. Fewer repetitions, considerably more work.
Both directions count
This is the part the Megaformer is built for. You don't just press the carriage away. You control the springs as they pull it back in.
That return is the eccentric phase, where the muscle produces force while lengthening rather than shortening. It's the part most people rush through in a gym, and it's the part that tends to produce the most strength and the most soreness.
On a Megaformer, rushing it isn't really an option. The springs will pull the carriage back whether you're controlling it or not, so the only choice is how much resistance you offer on the way. Slowing down the return is where a lot of the actual training happens.
What this builds: strength endurance
Strength endurance is the ability to stay strong, stable and in control even when your muscles are ready to call it.
It's a different quality from maximum strength. Max strength is what you can move once. Strength endurance is whether you're still moving well on the fortieth minute, the fifth flight of stairs, the third hour of carrying a toddler.
Time under tension is what builds it. Sustained load, held through a full range, repeated. The four-count is simply the most reliable way to create that in 40 minutes.
Why it burns, and why the shake is fine
The burn is metabolic. Muscles held under continuous tension don't get the brief recovery that fast reps allow, so byproducts accumulate and you feel it.
The shake is your muscles fatiguing under sustained load. It's not a sign that something is wrong or that you've reached your limit. It's the intended outcome of the exercise, which is why your instructor will probably ask you to go slower rather than let you speed up.
Slow reps versus fast reps
Neither tempo is universally better. They train different things.
Fast reps build power and rate of force development. They also rely on momentum, which means more reps for less tension per rep, and generally more impact through the joints.
Slow reps build strength endurance and muscular control. Fewer reps, much more tension, and very little joint impact because nothing is being swung or dropped.

What is the four-count? A tempo cue. Four counts out, four counts back, so a single repetition takes roughly eight seconds instead of one or two.
Does slow lifting actually build muscle? Yes. Muscle responds to tension and to how close a set gets to fatigue, not to how many repetitions you complete. Slow tempo reaches both with far less load and far less joint stress.
Why do my legs shake so much? Sustained tension fatigues the small stabilizing muscles first, and the shake is those muscles working. It's expected, particularly in the legs and core, and it eases as you build endurance.
It's too hard. Should I just go faster? No. Lower your spring tension or take the modification your instructor offers. Speeding up removes the training effect entirely, which means the exercise gets easier and stops doing anything.
Is slow training low impact? Yes. There's no jumping, no dropping and no momentum, so there's minimal load through the joints even though the muscular intensity is high.
